“Vocational learning - Innovative ways to teach “real life” skills”
Ian Lawson is the Director Employment and Training at Madeley Academy. A senior leader responsible for the running of the Vocational Training Centre. Ian passionately believes that young people need to gain customer care and business skills to prepare them for the future.
He has over 25 years of leadership and personal development experience gained in both the private and public sector. He started his career in a fast moving logistics operation. He then joined a business unit within Royal Mail becoming Operations Manager, Depot Manager and then Area Manager before moving into the Training and Development field. It was at a large multi-national stationery company that Ian was able to apply his theories and techniques of development becoming the groups first Training Director.
Many of the development initiatives implemented over this decade of change and growth had such positive results for the business that they were considered exemplars. Ian entered the business for many training and business awards and managed to hit the 40 award mark before he left. These included National Business Award successes at both regional and national level, the Training Magazines Top Training Team Award and the Personnel Today’s Training Excellence Award.
Ian took the Ireland operation through two “Excellence through People” assessments reaching gold standard and in the UK was one of the first to achieve the IIP Leadership & Management standard. As a result of this Ian was appointed an IIP ambassador. Ian continued to look at the wider business and HR issues that enable organisations to develop a fantastic working culture. During this period the company appeared in the Sunday Times Best Companies list 3 times and the FT Great Place to Work list twice.
