More details on the purpose of the CPD sessions are listed below:
In the last five years UK schools have spent more than £1 billion on digital technology. From interactive whiteboards to tablets, there is more digital technology in schools than ever before. But so far there has been little evidence of substantial success in improving educational outcomes.
The changing nature of the economy makes it essential that children on leaving education enter the workforce with the appropriate levels of digital skills to enable the UK to remain both competitive and leading-edge. However, there appears to be a fundamental issue that threatens this, namely our teacher’s inability to utilise hi-tech kit that is at their disposal to enhance the learning of their pupils. A recent report from NESTA entitled “Decoding Learning” said that whilst there is clear evidence that technology can boost learning, lack of training and understanding of modern technology amongst the teaching workforce is preventing this from occurring.
The main purpose of this event is to try to bridge the clear gap between the technology on offer and the limited skill base of those who have to utilise it. Many schools are clearly still using technology to support 20th century teaching methods and learning objectives. We are all acutely aware that technology could be much more effective if teachers and learners are given the right sort of training and use it in the right sort of ways.
Objectives
Attendance at this event will provide you with a knowledge and skills set that you will be able to take back to your workplace to the benefit of you organisation, including:

For those who haven't come across an SLTeachMeet yet, this is a chance to hear in an informal and lively fashion the best practice of your SLT peers, all from a wide range of settings, experiences and environments. Held in venues donated by kind supporters, attendees don't have to pay to attend a TeachMeet, and in addition, anyone can offer to speak! This event is sponsored by Toshiba Education.
The desire for an SLTeachMeet came from #SLTchat, a hashtag chat held every Sunday night, and started by Ross McGill, aka @TeacherToolkit. While digital chats were useful, there was a desire to have actual face-to-face meetings in an environment that is rarely-offered traditionally around school leaders. Stephen Lockyer (@mrlockyer) suggested the idea to Ross, and #SLTeachMeet was born!
To date, three events have occurred, with another four in the pipeline. We are honoured to be invited to hold an SLTeachMeet in Manchester, and can't wait to hear what the Manchester SLT have to say for themselves; though of course, anyone is welcome to speak!
Below are our terms of reference:
Our views:
- We are non-political
- We believe that digital and public sharing of good practice is key to outstanding CPD
- We are striving to improve ourselves for the benefit of our pupils and staff
- #SLTeachMeet will provide a platform to share success and an approach to leadership innovation, using strong and reflective leadership, by communicating this effectively through learning and collaboration.
Our aims:
- To provide high-class, free and where possible regional, learning events for Senior Leadership Team-members (and those aspiring to join SLT), whatever their venue of learning.
- CPD that is relevant, engaging and free from political rhetoric
- We aim to support networks of change, of mutual-support and innovative working practices for the greater good of our schools.
- To make attending #SLTeachMeet a valid and beneficial form of recognised CPD
- #SLTeachMeet will evolve continuously and adapt to meet the needs of all attendees
- Put value into the teachers' professionalism, creating an atmosphere where it is 'okay to fail', share and encourage reflective practice, giving time time and space to innovate.
How we do this:
- Organising #SLTeachMeets at high-profile conferences and venues only
- Rotate #SLTeachMeets across the regions, throughout the academic year
- Curating TeachMeet-style talks, which are disseminated online in AV and digital media where possible
- Co-ordinating with ethical sponsors to help fund and fulfill these aims
