AMiE is the leadership section of ATL, the education union, representing leaders and managers in schools and further education and is made up of head teachers, deputy and assistant head teachers, school bursars, business support managers, leaders and managers at all levels working in academies, further education, sixth form and adult education colleges; and managers in universities, training organisations and other areas of the education sector.
Given the increasing integration of schools and further education and AMiE's equally strong representation from both of these fields it means that AMiE is well placed to recognise opportunities and weaknesses within the current changes to the education landscape and express front line views on what would be best for both education leaders and managers, in delivering change on the ground, and for the learners they serve.
With extensive knowledge of the huge range of issues faced by leaders and managers every day, we understand that you have different needs and require a different level of expertise and guidance. AMiE has been developed with this in mind and provides its members with a dedicated top-quality service.
On 27 & 28 February AMiE/ATL will be represented at the Education Innovation conference & exhibition at Manchester Central, stand F44. The theme will be Data Gold, building on AMiE’s recent publication and website highlighting the importance of treating data with the respect it deserves. Co-author Russell Pearson will be on hand to offer advice on how to get the most of your data and how to gauge if your management information culture and ethos needs improving using the Data Gold ‘Culture & Ethos Toolkit’. He will also be talking about the training and consultancy opportunities that arise from the Data Gold booklet and related MIS Good Practice Guides and also talking about the newly launched Level 5 MIS Managers qualification.
Come along and hear first-hand how colleges have benefitted from implementing the strategies found in the book and guides and the positive outcomes that have resulted. With academies increasingly structured along the lines of further education there is also a lot of transferable learning for these in this sector too. There will also be a prize draw, the winner of which will secure a free half days consultancy from Russell relating to their MIS culture and ethos needs. There will also be goodies to give away and copies of the booklet and guides will be available.

Changing the world one mind at a time
MyCognition is dedicated to understanding and improving cognitive health. We are committed to working with schools because a healthy cognition is critical for getting the most out of education and thereafter for the rest of our life.
Cognition is responsible for all mental activities involved in receiving, understanding, storing, retrieving and using information. It is fundamental in the education setting for the high achievers as well as those trying to keep up.
We measure cognition through our online assessment, MyCQed. It evaluates the function of the five core cognitive domains that account for the majority of human cognition: Planning and Strategy; Concentration; Speed and Accuracy; Calculation and Working out and Remembering. MyCQed provides individuals with a validated score and shows their strengths and weaknesses across these five cognitive domains.
MyCQed is linked to our applied video game, “Escape from Monster Valley”, to ensure that gameplay is customized to meet specific cognitive requirements. Escape from Monster Valley is designed for student’s to enhance their mental agility in a fun way
During training with Escape from Monster Valley, MyCQed scores are reassessed to show how cognitive function is improving. This adaptive training will manifest itself in enhanced engagement, focus and recall in class, leading to better educational results and better cognitive health.

Oakford Technology has been protecting education and business data for over six years. The backup service was designed to replace the cumbersome tapes and procedures that we found in most of our schools.
The backup works by encrypting the data within the school before transferring data via the Internet on a secure (encrypted) line where it is then copied twice to two different UK datacentres. A daily email confirms that the data has been successfully backed up.
At the time of going to print, Oakford Backup securely stored over 200TB (Terabytes, or 200,000 Gigabytes!) of data, that’s about 4 million 4-drawer filing cabinets full of text!

Online safety in schools is no longer an ‘add on’ – it’s an essential part of child protection. High-profile cases of bullying, sexual grooming and young suicide are featured in the media with unrelenting regularity. While the finger of blame is frequently pointed at the child’s school, how can school leaders actually know what pupils and staff are doing online?
Over 3,000 school leaders have found the answer in Securus. Securus is a network monitoring system that flags up potential child protection issues, empowering schools to provide an immediate, informed response. Securus also helps schools to meet Ofsted recommendations by facilitating lasting improvements in pupil behaviour and safety, helping them to recognise unsafe situations and encouraging them to use new technologies responsibly. This cannot be achieved with blocking and filtering software alone.
And there’s some great news for schools at EICE 2014: the Securus Education Package now includes components of BOOST, the innovative online safety toolkit from South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL). BOOST delivers a number of services for schools, such as access to specialist resources, unlimited live professional development webinars and SWGfL Whisper, which enables schools to report issues anonymously and directly from their websites.
Securus doesn’t just offer cutting-edge technology: its team is comprised of experts in safeguarding and public protection, including former police officers with decades of experience. All Securus schools are kept informed with up-to-date support and advice to help keep their children safe. Securus also trains school staff, parents and children in online safety.
