09.30-09.45: E-learning for School Governors: What, who, how, where and why - Elaine Walton (Learning Pool)
“Change is the only constant” is the oft-heard cry of school governors. Governors are the biggest volunteer workforce in the UK. At a time when local authority governor training budgets are under increasing pressure, e-learning is seen as a flexible, cost-effective way to help keep governors up to speed on their role and responsibilities. Modern Governor, from Learning Pool, operates a community sharing e-learning platform specifically designed for school governors that’s being used by half of England’s local authorities. But it’s not just about cost-efficiencies. A blended learning solution - combining the best of online and face to face time - can help people to learn faster and retain more. Topics covered will include:
- Challenges faced by local authorities and school governors
- How we share knowledge and expertise throughout the community
- Dispelling the myths about e-learning and online school governors
- Local authority collaboration

Collaborative Learning Online
Professional development that embraces digital innovations in learning
A MirandaMod workshop led by the MirandaNet Fellowship
#MNcollaboration
In this workshop we work with teachers to explore the value of three different ways of digital learning: helping to understand what is possible in the world that most pupils already inhabit.
These three approaches have been developed over three decades by teachers and researchers who are members of the MirandaNet Fellowship, a professional organisation that focuses on the value of innovative technologies in teaching and learning.
- Informal collaborative learning online: Dr Christina Preston, Professor of Educational Innovation, MirandaNet Fellowship and University of
Bedfordshire;
- Twitter as creative social activity in professional learning: Dr Matthew Pearson, MirandaNet Fellowship;
- The Creative and Innovative use of the Visual in Learning: Theo Kuechel, Senior Fellow, MirandaNet Fellowship.
During the session we will work with participants to begin building an online collaborative concept map, capturing information on these topics on which professionals can build.
Raspberry Jamboree
Saturday 9th March ONLY
Raspberry Jam is the rapidly growing global network of users that meet every month to support anyone with an interest in the Raspberry Pi computer. We have had 1000s of people of all ages from Manchester to Melbourne and Silicon Valley to Singapore regularly attending Raspberry Jams to find out what they can do with this £25 computer. You don’t need to own a Raspberry Pi computer to attend, you only need to possess a desire to discover the potential of this device to boost interest and engagement in computing education.
We are delighted that the first Raspberry Jamboree is to take place in Manchester which has a rich history of computing innovation.
There are two principal aims of this Raspberry Jamboree, with particular emphasis on the first aim:
1. One year on since the general release of the Raspberry Pi computer, we plan to identify sucessful examples of how it is being used to change computing education for the better. We particularly want to encourage those with a stake in education to attend, to learn what the device is capable of, and judge the impact it is having on education.
2. In addition to this, we also hope to share successful Jam-making practice. As Raspberry Jams continue to spread far around the World, we plan to share what constitutes a successful Raspberry Jam, the most successful recipes and how to locate the best ingredients so you can have a successful Jam in your school, college, or community space.
We have a broad range of speakers, activities and workshops from stars in this field, with a rich supply of ideas for you to take away and practice.
The Raspberry Jamboree is co-locating with the Education Innovation exhibition and conference at Manchester Central. Ticket holders will receive free entry to the Education Innovation event.
Early bird registration is £5 (plus booking fee). Standard rate registration is £10 (plus booking fee).
